Lion King on Broadway

This past weekend I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend Lion King live at the Broward Center of Performing Arts. The tickets are priced starting at $34.25 so it's definitely affordable for families. The show was 2 hours and 30 minutes with a 15 minute intermission. Unfortunately, the last show is February 1st here in South Florida but if you are able to check it out elsewhere, I definitely recommend it.

I've only been to one Broadway show before this, which was years ago and the play was called "In the Heights." It was an incredible experience so when I heard Lion King was in town I had to jump at the opportunity. The show really brought the classic movie we all remember as children to life. A live orchestra band played the all the songs throughout the play and really kept everyone intrigued. The costumes were loud and colorful and made you feel like a part of the story. The play made a beautiful use African culture, costumes, art, and music. It was a overall culture experience.

The story of Lion King itself was very inspiring. I never seemed to realize as a child but now watching it as an adult I understand what a great impact the movie has made, which is why its so timeless and classic. The play starts out with the presentation of Simba as a baby cub. Simba then grows into a young child, played by Tre Jones. Simba is a curious cub and is constantly getting in trouble with his mischievous ways. Mufasa, his father, played by L. Steven Taylor, is the King on the Pride Lands. Simba is next in line for the throne. This is a brave journey of a cub who grows into an adult Lion and struggles to find himself and fights fear and doubt to one day become a great King.

What amazed me the most was the stage props and costumes. They were amazingly creative. There were huge human giraffes and elephants, Timon and Pumba were puppets controlled by actors, there were herds of deers propped on bicycles to mimic movements, the hyaena's costumes were incredibly realistic, and the body paint on the actors really made everything feel authentic.

I can't rave enough about this show. It was an incredible experience that I will treasure forever, at any age. I recommend checking out the show if you have the chance, and if not, attend a Broadway show that seems interesting to you. Live shows lets you experience a story a whole different way.
